Exeter's Black Heritage

Shortly after the American Revolution, the population of Exeter, NH, was more racially diverse than it is today. African Americans, enslaved, free and recently manumitted, comprised 4.8% of Exeter’s population, a larger percentage than any other town in the state. The contributions of Exeter’s Black population have often been overlooked when examining the history of our town. On-going research has broadened our understanding of Exeter’s Black heritage. Curator Barbara Rimkunas will discuss the challenges faced by the Black community through the stories of several notable families and will examine some of the reasons the population declined in the late 19th century. This program is co-hosted by Exeter TV and is free and open to the public.
