The preamble of the US Constitution proclaims as its central purpose the creation of a “more perfect union.” If the Constitution had been put to a popular vote, however, it would probably never have been ratified. Eliga Gould will tell the fascinating story of this turbulent history — of the crisis that produced the Constitutional Convention in 1787, of the controversial new document that the Federalist delegates adopted in response, and the political compromises and horse-trading that were necessary to ensure the Constitution’s ratification.
Refreshments will be served at 6:30 pm. The program is open to the public; there is a $5 suggested donation for non-members (or $1 for students).
